Our house was a typical 1930s, semi-detached, ex-council house that had had the wrong things done in the wrong order to it since the last tenant bought it. We have just completed a EnerPHit conversion. The 1930s was a peak house-building period, so many people could copy what we did or do better. We will help other people who wish to do something similar.

'Big' insulation works: EnerPHit conversion incl insulated concrete floor, cavity wall, ext wall & loft insulation

Glazing: Triple Glazing

Lighting systems and electrical appliances: LEDs + induction hob

High spec heating: Vaillant condensing boiler + micro-bore pipes to hot taps to reduce heat-loss from “dead legs.”

Renewables: heat: Brink Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery + recovery of 85% heat from exhaust gases

Renewables: electricity: Consumer unit with expansion capability for future PV

Water management: Higher capacity gutters + down-pipes + water butts + soak-aways

Sustainable building materials: Timber windows, doors, architraves, skirting & window boards

Lifestyle change: Breathing cleaner air indoors with higher oxygen content

Other (please state): Good air-tightness to meet EnerPHit requirement.

Estimated energy savings

We were told that, if we get EnerPHit certification, we are likely to see a reduction of energy for space heating (gas only) of about 90%. We will achieve a lower % reduction in electricity usage. We will compare the energy meter readings after conversion with 8 years' readings before conversion.
