House built over 100 years ago.present owners purchased in1978. The floor in this the largest in the house, approx 24ftX12ft,had collapsed. Ventilation in the underlying void 4ft deep was increased by making additional vents.
Two years ago we attempted to greatly reduce heat loss by cutting bails of mineral fibre, and stuffing them between the substantial rafters. The rock wool was made from recycled plastic available at Wicks at that time was only £5/roll. In addition breathable roofing felt was tacked upside down to the underside of the floor joists, providing support to the wool, and allowing moisture from human activity above an outlet. Notice in the photos that some edges are not sealed......reflecting a dilemma: joint of joists with brick wall needs ventilation to stop rot. But cold outside air at junction will cool the room upstairs. Any one suggest a solution? Overall we have noticed a very big increase in the level of comfort.
The rear extension done in 2002 is an interesting example of maximising solar gain, natural light and integrating the house with the garden.
The modification of the original wooden windows in the front is an attempt to combine respect for the original architecture with an inexpensive up grade of efficiency.
